Eden Seminary
(Click a photo to see an enlarged version.) Landscape Technologies and
Robert E. Goetz & Associates, LTD teamed to generate
a master plan of the historic Eden Seminary campus. This
campus dates to 1924 and is the site of wonderful architecture,
huge old oaks and a rich history that extends beyond 1924.
The design team faced several challenges, including outdated
pedestrian and vehicular circulation, poor signage, lack
of recreational opportunities, a quadrangle that was no
longer serving as a strong focal point and aging landscape
material.
The vehicular circulation was totally re-designed
to create safer passages through the site while giving
the feel of
driving through a park. Parking arrangements were studied
and improved where valid. Vistas were created to make the
Administration Building more dominant, delineating it as
a strong focal point. Pedestrian access throughout the
campus was improved to bring the entire campus into ADA
compliance and patios, seating and “reflective” locations
were created for the students’ benefit.
The quadrangle
was re-designed to, once again, serve as a focal point
of the campus and a pleasant gathering place
for people on campus. New seating, a new fountain and
new landscaping were added while making all spaces accessible
to the disabled population.
New traditional signage was
created at the main entrance to help delineate the main
entrance point to the campus.
In the same way, the Library entrance, formerly concealed
on the south side, was opened up to become more visible
from East Lockwood.
Two new playgrounds were designed
to serve the children of on-campus students and for the
day-care children of
off-campus students. Additionally, adult recreation
was created.
Much of the landscape material is old and nearing
the end of life cycles. The entire campus landscape was
inventoried and new landscaping added. Landscaping
was also planned
for four new single-family teaching staff residences.
