National State Garden Clubs Headquarters,
St. Louis, Missouri

The National Council of State Garden Clubs Headquarter facilities are located in an historic area of St. Louis adjacent to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. The site includes remnants of a Frederick Law Olmsted plan developed in the late 1800s and plays a significant part in the history of urban park development in St. Louis. In 1995, Smith Dalia Architects (Atlanta, GA)
designed an addition to the existing 1950s building,  matching many of the materials used in the original construction and maintaining the spectacular views towards the gardens.

The existing upper terrace garden paving was repaired and a middle-tier, formal garden was designed to transition from the upper level to the lower level. At the center of the formal garden is a striking sculpture. To meet ADA requirements, wheelchair accessible ramps were added and progress through an adjacent butterfly garden.

Benches along the way allow for rests or for butterfly viewing. Strategically placed water and stone help attract butterflies to the garden. All plant material used in the Butterfly Garden were chosen because of their proven popularity with many species of butterflies. Additional benefits are the many songbirds that are also attracted to this garden.
